Antwain Nelson, Zack Davis, Brian Taylor and Justin Hardy placed in the 4×800 relay and secured a spot in the state meet. The group of runners were the only individuals from the Demopolis team to make state, but coach Dusty Davis said the whole team did well in what was the final meet for the rest of the team for the season.
Davis said both of his teams, boys and girls, placed eight in the sectionals as a team out of a field of 11. He said, while that isn&8217;t winning the match, it is impressive for such a young group, whole were able to learn from their experience at the meet.
Davis said getting all of this experience for his young team members would equate to a stronger team down the road for Demopolis. He said the team would be stacked down the road if this group that has seen competition and is now used to big meets such as sectional stay around the team for the duration of their high school careers.
The four boys that placed for state, however will get even more time to soak up the competitive track atmosphere as they travel back to St. Paul&8217;s in Mobile to compete in the state track meet, where they will face an even more competitive group of athletes. The group will compete in the 4×400 relay on Saturday May 5. While attending the meet, for division 4A, 5A and 6A schools they will have a change to see some of the strongest track and field athletes the state has to offer.
