Laduron said the two girls had exchanged &8220;words&8221; with each other on Wednesday. The bus driver said that the two were not sitting together on the bus Thursday morning, Laduron said.

Laduron said the wounds are not life threatening.

The school nurse treated the victim at school, officials said. Smith also received injuries after the alleged assault when trying to hide the weapon from authorities, Laduron said.

School officials responded to the incident on the bus and confiscated the knife from Smith and then called the police. The Linden Police Department responded to the call around 8:15 a.m., Laduron said.

Davis said, although there were other students on the bus at the time of the incident, &8220;there were no other students in danger at anytime.&8221;

Davis said the victim is back at school. Laduron said he is unsure at this time what the motive for the assault was.

Davis said that Smith has not returned to school and will face expulsion through a student hearing if she attempts to return to school.

Smith is being held in the Marengo County Jail. At press-time, she had not posted bond.
