DEMOPOLIS &8212; Visitors and residents of the Demopolis are invited to take a walk with history and participate in a guided walking tour of the City of Demopolis.
This will be the fourth year for the Chamber to participate in an effort of the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel to host &8216;Saturday Walking Tours&8217; for six consecutive Saturdays in cities and towns across the state. The tours will begin on May 26 and run each Saturday until June 30.
Smith said the tours would take about one hour to complete.
Different community volunteers will lead the tours each week. The route for the tours will cover the downtown historic district and the public square and will tell the history of Demopolis. The different guides will be sharing their own personal memories and even some local &8216;tall tales&8217;.
Smith said the Chamber still has a few spots open for tour leaders and she encourages anyone interested in hosting a tour to contact her at the Chamber.
Alabama is the only state in the nation to hold statewide, simultaneous walking tours &8212; an innovation of State Tourism Director Lee Sentell. When the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel launched the program two years ago, it was met with such enthusiasm that Sentell decided to make it an annual event.
Smith said the tours in Demopolis have grown greatly in popularity.
