DEMOPOLIS &8212; The Public Library will soon begin its summer reading program and a series of events for youth in the area.

Director of the library, Lindsy Gardner said the program and events will provide an outlet for children looking for something to do while out on summer break. She said while registration will soon begin for the reading program it will continue for the duration of the summer for late comers interested in joining the program. &8220;Sign up for the program begins next Tuesday,&8221; said Gardner. &8220;It will continue all summer, and it won&8217;t fill up because there isn&8217;t a set number of slots available.&8221;

Gardner said the reading program will give each participant a reading log, with which they will keep up with the books they have read or have had read to them. The children in the reading program will have chances to win prizes through the number of books they read.

For reading 10 picture books or five chapter books, students will receive a free book. For double that amount they will also pick up a free personal pizza from Dominos. The biggest prize for each age group, preschool, kindergarten through third grade and fourth through sixth grades, will be a $100 gift certificate to Wal-Mart. Participants will be able to enter into the drawing for the certificates once a day during the program for each book read.

Gardner said children do not have to register to attend the events at the library, which will be grade specific and open to all. She said she thinks the events planned will really hold the interest and provide entertainment for children attending.

Other than the cow, Gardner said the other highly anticipated event of the week would be the Critter Show by Rick Rakestraw on June 7. She said he will bring exotic animals to show children, from monkeys to snakes.
