DEMOPOLIS &8212; Taking a break from its normal regiment of dominating tournaments, the Demopolis Lady Ballers softball team is hosting a tournament rather than participating in one this weekend.

The Ballers have participated in three tournaments so far this summer and have won two and rounded out the top three in all. Coaches for the team, Dion Pritchett and Derrick Carter, attribute the group&8217;s success to team chemistry.

Pritchett said players travel from places like Eutaw and Greensboro, as well as its talent from Demopolis. He said the talent of the team is also fostered by a strong practice regiment that sharpens players for their day on the diamond.

By getting in shape, Pritchett means running and working on their fielding. All of this work comes together with the group&8217;s talent according to team coach Derrick Carter.

So far, the formula has worked for the team. The group has already won tournaments at Yellow Bluff and Camden. Its worst tournament performance this year was placing third in a competition in Thomasville.

The group has plans to play in several more tournaments before the summer softball season comes to a head.

Currently the group is working on organizing several projects rather than busting up tournament hopefuls for other teams. It is hosting a tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Demopolis SportsPlex, in which the Ballers will refrain from playing. The group is also in the midst of forming a lady&8217;s softball league in Demopolis to foster the competitive spirit of the area.

Once its organizational duties are over the group looks forward to getting back to work on the diamond and busting up its upcoming tournaments.
