DEMOPOLIS &8212; The Two Rivers Arts Council is sponsoring its Fifth Annual Artists Showcase from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Demopolis Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Member of the council, Beverly Youngblood, said the event is a way for the council, whose mission is promoting arts in the area and to expose the talents of local artists. She said the event allows artists a venue to display their works.

Youngblood said the event usually brings a range of different platforms of artistic expression. She said the showcase has featured artists working in painting, sculpting, glassmaking, photography, pottery, jewelry and woodcarvings among others. She said the variety of the art exhibited is one of the things that makes the showcase unique.

Youngblood said the event is considered a showcase because the event is a display of works rather than a sale. She said artists and those attending the showcase have negotiated ways to transfer the art to private ownership, but that is not what is promoted through the council&8217;s side of the showcase.

Youngblood said the event usually draws around 25 artists who display their works. She also mentioned that the showcase is usually held in June, though it has been pushed back this year due to members of the arts council being out of town.

Along with the art being presented at the showcase, Youngblood said the council usually has local musical artists perform during the showcases, in order to give them exposure as well. She said the showcase tries to encompass all genres and give them a venue through the event.
