Old Springhill fire remains under investigation

OLD SPRINGHILL &8212;

The July 27 house fire at 1484 County Road 1, the home of Joseph Courtney, is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal&8217;s Office and the Marengo County Sheriff&8217;s Department.

Paulk said during the process of investigating the fire in Old Springhill, information concerning James Sheffield, 27, of Gallion, who is being considered a person of interest in the case, lead to his being charged with arson for a fire in Maplesville from several years ago.

Sheriff Jesse Langley said Tuesday Sheffield is still being considered a suspect in the Old Springhill case and has been questioned during his incarceration at the Chilton County Detention Center.

Langley said, Sheffield is believed to

be involved with arsons in other counties in the past that may have caused deaths or serious injuries. Langley said Sheffield might also gone by the alias James Willis.

When asked about other suspects or persons of interest in the case, Paulk said, &8220;Everyone is of interest in a case especially when it is thought to be criminal in nature.&8221;

Langley said Old Springhill Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze and there were no injuries associated with the fire.
