Eagles claw past Hornets for win

DEMOPOLIS &8212; After a big loss 53-6 last week against South Lamar High School at home, the A.L. Johnson Eagles went on the road to in county rival John Essex High School and started their climb out of the hole with a 50-14 win over the Hornets.
The Eagles came out strong against an undermanned, under inflated John Essex group.
The first half scoring was a one-man show from A.L. Johnson High School running back Cleophus Daniels. The Eagles dominated the first half 21-0 and looked like they were headed to a scoreless blowout.
Daniels, at least, got momentum going with a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:46 is the first quarter, a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:03 in the first and a touchdown return off a blocked punt with 1:03 to go in the half.
Jones&8217; group opened the scoring again with 6:15 in the third quarter off a 8-yard touchdown run from Alphonso Steele, but the Hornets refused to be shutout of the game and found their way to the end zone with 4:09 in the quarter off a 46-yard run to the outside by Jamie Daniels to make it 28-8.
The Eagles countered with two of their own in the form of another touchdown off a 2-yard run from Daniels and a 25-yard run from Roland Henton to open scoring in the fourth quarter.
John Essex found the end zone for the final time for the Hornets in the game off a 60-yard reception from Daniels with 4:55 to go. Three minutes and 25 seconds later the Eagles wrapped it up as well off a 45-yard run by Matthew Jones.
