Demopolis victorious over rival Greensboro

GREENSBORO &8212; It was an intense night of scoring for the visiting Tigers at Robert Lucky Field as Demopolis High School faced off against the Greensboro Raiders.

The first score came in the opening quarter of play, when Jeremy Wallace came down with a one-handed grab rifled over the middle by Rick Boone for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Demopolis had the lead 7-0 with 4:00 left on the clock.

Greensboro&8217;s first drive ended in a punt, and Demopolis capitalized with good field position when Shantrell Braxton lit the field up with a 37-yard touchdown run. Demopolis had the lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-0.

Early in the second quarter, the Raiders showed the Tigers their passing game when Dantrille Lee hit Lafeyette Hurns for a 43-yard pass, pushing the Raiders into the red zone. The Greensboro offense pushed the ball to the 1-yard line in the next three plays.

Lee kept the ball for a 1-yard touchdown carry, giving the Raiders their first score of the night. They tried for the two-point conversion, but were stopped in the backfield by the Tiger&8217;s defense. Demopolis led 14-6 with 8:44 left in the half.

The Tigers drove the ball down the field on their next drive and Boone capitalize on a quarterback keeper to give the Tigers a 21-6 lead.

On Demopolis&8217; next drive, Boone&8217;s pass was intercepted by Riley Benson. After moving the ball down the field, Lee threw a dump pass to Kiara Paige for a 10-yard touchdown pass with only 7.2 seconds left in the half. This led to a two-point conversion, ending the half with Demopolis leading 21-14.

Only 30 seconds into the second half, the Tiger&8217;s Braxton broke up the middle for a 77-yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed, making the score 27-14 Demopolis.

On Demopolis&8217; next possession of the second half, the offense ran the ball down the field and capped it off when Jeremy Wallace broke to the outside for a 5-yard touchdown run. That ended the third quarter with Demopolis leading 34-14.

In the final quarter, the Raiders stalled on a 5 minute 25 second drive, turning the ball over on downs. The Boone/Wallace duo hooked up again for a Demopolis touchdown pass with 8:45 left in the game giving the Tigers an even larger lead of 41-14.

Shortly after, Willy Wallace rushed for a 5-yard touchdown. The score was 48-14 with 7 minutes left.

The Raiders still had something to prove when Lee found Lafeyette Hurns for an 84-yard touchdown pitch and catch with only 33.1 seconds left in the ball game. The Raiders got the two-point conversion making the final score 48-22 Demopolis.

Demopolis had 325 rushing yards and 38 passing yards for a total of 423 yards in the game. The Raiders accumulated only 53 yards on 26 attempts, but had a total of 213 yards passing, giving Greensboro a total of 266 yards.
