Historic homes decked out for Christmas in the Canebrake

DEMOPOLIS &8212; The theme for this year&8217;s Christmas in the Canebrake is Christmas Past and Present, with Bluff Hall and Lyon Hall decked out in their holiday best for people to come by and take tours of the historical sites on Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Marengo County Historical Society, but numerous volunteers from local clubs helped to get the homes ready.

According to Kirk Brooker, the homes will be decorated in period fashion with fresh cedar, smilax, berries and cane among other native naturals.

Members of Demopolis Civitan, The Pilot Club, The Reading Club, The Colonial Book Club, The Chataqua Club, United Methodist Women, The Study Club, and friends of the Society have volunteered their time and talent to decorate each room for the holidays.

The event will also feature musical performances. Bluff Hall will hear performances from the Demopolis High School choir, John Bultman on banjo; Camilla Tutt, Jamey Hurst on guitar and Sydney Hill.

Lyon Hall will feature performances from The Old Fellows with stringed instruments, First United Methodist Men&8217;s Gospel Group and Gay Collins, voice and clarinet; Wanda Dunklin and Dana Lane on flute, John Bultman on banjo and Carnley Graham.

Brooker said there will also be &8220;sweets and savories, each lovingly prepared by Society volunteers.&8221;
