Longhorns fail to overcome cold 1st quarter

TOXEY &8212;In their second game of the season, the Longhorns again went on the road to take on the Rebels of South Choctaw on Nov. 26.

Marengo Academy started the game cold, and were unable to add the first points to the board. After several minutes of play, the &8217;Horns were able to get points on the board with four each from Dustin McIntyre and Kyle Stephens.

At the end of the first period, the two groups remained close with South Choctaw holding the 11-10 edge. But the Rebels pulled away and made an 11-point run on the Horns in the second period. Marengo Academy only managed to add four in the quarter, which came from Drew Stuart and Trace Stenz.

Going into half, South Choctaw held the 22-14 lead over the Longhorns.

The &8217;Horns fought hard and added 11 more points after intermission, with four points coming from Stuart for the third period. But it still was not enough to close the cap, as Southern Choctaw Academy countered with 13 and ended third period on top 35-25.

The &8217;Horns fought hard in the final period, and the group closed the gap to a three-point deficit. Racking up points to help cut the rebel lead for Marengo Academy was John Carlton, with a total eight points of the 12 points scored for the period. The Rebels pulled away with 14 points for the period and won 49-37 &8212; giving the Horns a 1-1 record.

Rebounding for the Longhorns were: Justin Etheridge and Cory Huth, with one apiece, McIntyre, with two, Stuart and Andy Flowers, with three, Carlton, with four, Stephens, with six, Beau Digmon, with seven.

With steals for Marengo Academy were from Etheridge, Digmon, Stenz, McIntyre and Stephens, with one each. McIntyre lead Longhorn blocks and Carlton, Etheridge and Digmon each had one assist. Scorers were Carlton, with nine, Stuart, with eight, McIntyre and Stephens, with six, Stenz, with five, Weldon Fultz, with two, and Digmon, with one.

The varsity Longhorns will travel to Southern to play in their Christmas Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The girls will play Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Pickens with the boys playing at 4:45 p.m.
