Junior Lady Horns buck expectations, battle to 3rd in state

Coming into the game as the last seed in the Alabama Independent School Association state tournament, the Marengo Academy junior high girls&8217; team busted up the ranks to finish third in the state.

The group started their tournament against Sparta Academy, who were picked to beat out the Lady &8217;Horns and finish third in the state. But the Marengo group had other plans, playing hard to a close 25-21 win to advance.

Stats for the game were: Libba Carroll with three rebounds, three steals, two assists and four points; Destiny Huckabee with seven rebounds, four steals, four assist, and three points; Nicole Langley with two rebounds, a steal, an assist and three points; Ciara McIntyre with an assist; Donelle Hale with five rebounds; Katie Tucker with a rebound, two steals and three points; Maleah Digmon with eight rebounds, two steals, two blocks and 12 points.

In their second and final match up the tournament, the Lady &8217;Horns faced the eventual state champions in Lakeside Academy. Lakeside proved too dominant, though, and waltzed their way to a 47-22 win.

Scoring for the Lady Longhorns were Carroll with eight points, Huckabee with two points, Langley with two points, Tucker with two points, Peyton Baugh with two points and Digmon with four points.
