DEMOPOLIS &045; With a team captain’s meeting held earlier this week, the dedicated volunteers for Marengo County Relay for Life are one step closer to their main event, which is scheduled for April 25 at River Park.
One of the items on the agenda for the team captains was to discuss and vote on a theme for the all-night event. This year’s theme will be &8220;songs&8221; with each participating booth decorating and having a slogan to go with a song they choose. They also coordinate their team’s booth with Relay for Life’s main mission, which is raising awareness of cancer and ultimately raising funds to beat it.
Just a few of the teams participating, according to Brown, are Foster Farms, Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital and Dana Suttles Trucking. Brown said there are also teams for the Demopolis City School System, including the Demopolis High School chapter of DECA and girls’ softball.
A returning team this year is Robertson Banking Company, who will have the help of their top fundraiser, Tommy Vice, Brown said.
For those who are interested in participating and do not have a team, Brown said anyone can join a team even if they are not affiliated with a certain organization.
If anyone is interested in being a part of a team, Jimbo Ward is this year’s team development chairman, Brown said. Also, there are no limits on the number of teams or team members.
Another change for this year’s event is that Regions Bank will be responsible for handling all Relay for Life donations. Also, if people want to make donations in memory of someone, Regions will handle that as well, she said.
Last year’s total fundraising goal was $65,000, but by the end of the yearlong process, Relay for Life was able to raise over $66,000 from team and individuals donations.
