Sunshine girls fall in regional finals

MONTGOMERY &8212; A lid on the basket in the third quarter and three players covering sophomore guard Shafontaye Myers put an end to the No. 5 ranked Sunshine Lady Tigers&8217; season. They fell 59-50 to the St Jude Lady Pirates in Thursday&8217;s AHSAA Central Regional Class 1A finals.
St. Jude made defensive adjustments at the half, but offensively went on a 15-0 run to open the third quarter and that proved to be the difference in the game. Sunshine managed its first bucket of the quarter on Shanquilla Carter&8217;s put back after offensive rebound with the clock reading 2:13. The Lady Pirates led by as much as 13 in the quarter, but Sunshine was able to get as close as seven late in the quarter.
The Lady Tigers led at the half 29-27.
Myers, who finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and four steals, walked away the tournament&8217;s MVP award. Carter added eight points and pulled down nine boards.
