History one step at a time

Throughout the month of June, the city of Demopolis will be one of 32 cities across the state participating in the Alabama Department of Tourism&8217;s Saturday Walking Tours.

The tours, which will take place on each Saturday throughout the month, will start at City Hall at 10 a.m. The tours focus on the downtown area of Demopolis and the area&8217;s historical structures, but according to Demopolis native and tour guide Martha Griffith, it&8217;s not necessarily the structures that make the tours so great.

Wendy Brown has served as a guide for the last two years.

Whether young or old, the tours promise to teach everyone a little more about The City of the People. You may hear about funeral items being sold in the back of a furniture store or the Theatre District that once existed.

Saturday Walking Tours, as they have been known as since their start five years ago, are free to the public and will take about an hour to complete.

For more information on the tours, contact the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce at 334-289-0270.
