Road work ahead

DEMOPOLIS &8212; Drivers on Arcola Road will notice some delays over the next couple of weeks.

A road construction project near the Cemex truck entrance forced the closure of one lane of the two-lane street for several days.

While the repaved stretch is probably only 20 feet long, the new concrete will need time to properly dry.

The project will take approximately 16 to 18 days overall, depending on how quickly the concrete dries &8212; or cures &8212; in the humidity.

The project began Monday with work on the westbound lane.

There will be workers waving caution flags during the day, but at night drivers should exercise sound judgment and be cautious, Williams said.

Once the concrete cures on the westbound lane, construction crews will then close the eastbound lane to work on it, and open the westbound lane to traffic.

The repairs to the street were made necessary due to heavy trucks turning into the Cemex plant, Williams said. The asphalt simply hasn&8217;t stood up to the wear and tear. The concrete &8212; reinforced with steel rods, or rebar &8212; is expected to be much stronger and last longer.
