DEMOPOLIS &8212; The straight-line winds of an afternoon rainstorm left a power pole down on U.S. Hwy 80 in front of the Pennzoil Lube Center and a number of businesses without power on Tuesday afternoon.

Businesses from Holiday Cleaners all the way to the Highway 80 Citgo on U.S. 80 west were without power, as were all traffic lights along that section of the highway.

Alabama Power crews were on the scene around 3:15 p.m., and initially estimated power to be back on within two hours according to Cory Sweeney, operations manager for the Demopolis area.

Power ended up being restored around 5:30 p.m.

Many businesses along that strip of highway were adversely affected by the outage.

Holiday Cleaners was unable to make sales for the latter part of the afternoon. Batter Up Sports Grill was forced to move their opening time for dinner from 5 p.m. to about 6:15 p.m.

Jack&8217;s restaurant was closed for about three hours.

John Whitehead, general manager at Wal-Mart, said that although the registers and lights did go out, their primary concern was taking care of the groceries and coolers they&8217;re stored in.

Wal-Mart did not lose any stock in the event, but sales were lost as they were forced to close their doors after the reserve battery on the registers went out forty minutes following the power failure.

Jason Windham, owner of Holiday Cleaners and manager of Batter Up, was not so fortunate.

Another power pole was downed on Wallace Harper Drive according to the Alabama Power crew on the scene.
