State fire marshals have ruled arson as the cause of two fires that damaged a Greensboro home and church Tuesday morning.

The home of Jessie Wiggins on Hale County Road 7 in Greensboro was the scene Tuesday morning of the second house fire in two weeks.

“Preliminary investigation indicates these fires are the result of arson,” Alabama State Fire Marshal Ed Paulk said.

The fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. yesterday morning, and moderate to heavy damage was confined to one room in the property. Approximately two hours later, at 3:29 a.m., fire damaged the front door of the Pinegrove Baptist Church on Hale County Road 47, also in Greensboro, only about five miles from the first scene. Damage to the church was considered minor, as the fire was confined to the front door.

“This fire was arson, as the front door to the church was set on fire,” according to the State Fire Marshal’s office. It’s not certain if these fires are related, as the investigation continues.
