Hillary Stapp named Marengo County Junior Miss

Hillary Stapp, a senior at Demopolis High School and the daughter of Scott and Katrina Stapp, was awarded the 2009 Marengo County Junior Miss title Saturday night.

She was given her award medal by 2008 Marengo County Junior Miss Catie Cole.

As her talent, Stapp did a solo piano performance of Scott Joplin’s “Old Time Rag.”

For being named the Marengo County Junior Miss, Stapp was awarded a $2,000 scholarship.

She is the captain of the DHS cheerleading squad, the Senior Beta Club president, Student Council president, Key Club president and a member of the DHS tennis team.

She was named Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen highest grade-point average and is a member of the Praise Team at the First United Methodist Church. She is a member of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The first alternate was Lauren Atkins, a senior at Demopolis High School and the daughter of Allen and Lisa Atkins. She earned a $1,500 scholarship award. The second alternate was Whitney Gavin, a senior at Clarke Preparatory School and the daughter of Craig and Betsy Gavin. She earned a $1,000 scholarship award.

Stapp will be one of 48 contestants to compete on Jan. 16-17 at the Frazier United Methodist Church in Montgomery for the title of Alabama’s Junior Miss. Contestants there will compete for at least $53,600 in scholarship awards and a potential $2 million in college-granted scholarships.

The winner of that competition will vie for the title of America’s Junior Miss on June 25-27 in Mobile, which includes a total of more than $150,000 in scholarships.

The Junior Miss is selected using several criteria, including an interview, scholastic merit, talent, poise and fitness.
