The Coming Together Organization Inc. held its 17th annual toy drive on Thursday, and New Era Caps served as the host location.
People stopped at New Era from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to drop off toys for children in need. Boxes were set up in front of the baseball cap plant for people to deposit their toy gifts, which ranged from dolls and books to games and other fun things.
“It’s been great,” said New Era Caps plant manager John Upshaw.
“I hope we can turn this into an annual event. We appreciate the help of all the people in Demopolis who have come by to contribute.”
New Era Caps employees were giving out free Major League Baseball caps to those who donated toys to the drive.
“The Demopolis community has been extremely generous, as always,” said Thomas Moore of the Coming Together Organization Inc. “Obviously, we don’t take that lightly. A lot of people are blessed by their generosity. We’ve been doing this for 17 years, and it’s only getting better.”
The toys will be distributed on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 3 p.m. at the housing project on Pettus Street.
Although the drive was held last Thursday, people who still want to contribute to the drive can still do so through Dec. 24 by bringing toys and games to the Demopolis Shoe Shop on North Strawberry Avenue in downtown Demopolis. For more information, contact Grady Kelly at (334) 341-3081.
“We also feed people on Christmas morning,” Kelly said. “We’ve served up to 600 plates. If anyone wants to receive a dinner, they can call Kora’s Place at 289-4911.”
