The 2009 Relay for Life for Marengo County will get under way with the first captains’ meeting of the year, to be held today (Tuesday) at 5:30 p.m. at the Demopolis City Library.

All Relay for Life team captains, team members, committee members and anyone interested in taking part are welcome to the meeting to learn more about how to get involved with Relay for Life.

“It will be an opportunity for our team captains to come together and get information about Relay,” said Jennifer Hallman, community representative for Relay for Life for Marengo County. “We’ll have team captains returning from previous years, and maybe some new team captains as well. It gives our team captains the opportunity to share information and let us know what kind of fund-raisers they’re planning, so we can help get the word out.”

Hallman said there is room for people who are not yet part of an established team.

“We have room for individuals who want to get involved at any level,” she said. “If we have some people who don’t have enough to form a team, they can join an existing team or they can do individual fund-raising.

“One tool that makes that easier to do is our Web site, www.relayforlife.org/marengo. They can register as an individual or as a team on our Web site, and they can use the Web site to send out e-mails to their friends or family locally or throughout the world. A lot of people find it easier to use this Web site to donate online using a credit card or debit card, rather than write a check.”

Hallman said that donations are tax deductible, and would show on the credit card or debit card report to help with filing taxes.

“A lot of times, we have businesses that create teams, we have churches that have teams or just people get together and form teams,” she said.

The 2009 Relay for Life for Marengo County will begin on Friday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at the city landing park.
