Westside prepares for kindergarten registration

Registration for kindergarten at Westside Elementary will be March 26 and 27, according to WES principal Connie Brown.
Children whose last names begin with a letter from A to L should register on Thursday, March, 26, while those whose last names begin with a letter from M to Z should register on Friday, March 27.
Registration will run from noon to 2 p.m. each day.
“The children will go through a screening,” Brown said.
“That will be about a 30- to 45-minute process. The Pilot Club will be there, and they will fingerprint the students. Parents need to bring their children’s original birth certificate, Social Security card and two proofs of residency.”
The screenings include vision and hearing screenings, and students will also be given an informal assessment to give teachers an idea about what the children know going into kindergarten.
“That helps us in creating our classroom rosters for the next year,” Brown said.
“We want a nice, balanced classroom in everyone’s classroom, and we can use that as one indicator.”
Children who register this month are invited to participate in a two-week kindergarten session in June, where students will spend half-days at Westside Elementary getting used to the school and preparing for kindergarten classes.
