The parking lot at Wal-Mart saw contestants putting on the dog for a good cause.

Wal-Mart hosted its first dog show on Saturday, what Wal-Mart officials said they hoped would become an annual event. Dog owners donated at least $10 into the kitty to enter the dog show. Proceeds benefited Marengo County Relay for Life.

Ten canines pounded the pavement to show their stuff in nine categories, including longest ears, sweetest, laziest, best dressed, friendliest, best trick, most obedient, best groomed and fattest. The dog with the best overall score earned best in show.

Judges Terry Peeler, Marcus Campbell and Ann Chambless, all of Sumter County, scored the competition.

Anna, owned by Leyann Bennett, won the best in show as well as the most obedient.

Jacques, owned by Traci Hurst, was the other multiple award-winner, taking the longest ears and best groomed categories.

The sweetest dog went to Miss Zoe, owned by Karen Gaughan of Scranton, Pa., who was camping with her husband at Foscue Park when they saw the dog show sign at Wal-Mart and decided to join in the fun.

The laziest dog went to little Elvis, owned by Jillian Cramer, while the best dressed dog went to Prissy, owned by Ann Bush.

The friend;iest dog was Hamy, owned by Patsy Carmona, while the best trick was awarded to Anna, owned by Leslie Gibbs, and the fattest dog went to Dixie, owned by Lacey Brame.

Wal-Mart also sold hot dogs at the dog show, while Robertson Banking Company had a bake sale going on, all to benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.
