A pick-up truck driving on U.S. Highway 80 lost control, jumped the curb and crashed into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Foy Wright on Thursday.
Officials believe the driver of the pick-up truck had a seizure while driving westbound on U.S. 80. He jumped the curb, ran into a West Alabama Mental Health Center directional sign and rolled into the den of the Wright house on South Main Avenue.
Foy Wright, who was home alone and sitting in a chair less than 10 feet from where the truck came into the room, said he saw the driver tremble, then slump over.
“At first, I thought he was dead,” Wright said, “but then, I saw he was still breathing and called 911.”
The driver was taken by ambulance to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Wright was unharmed in the accident.
The truck went through a wall at the left end of the front of the house and went all the way to the back wall before stopping. Damage was caused to windows, furniture and wall hangings.
Wright’s wife, Hettie, was shopping when the accident occurred. She said that if she had been at home, she would have been sitting on a couch directly in the path of the truck.
The accident took place at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday. More information will be available on Friday.
