The March of Dimes announced that its 2009 March of Dimes Walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, beginning and ending at the City Landing pavilion.
The Walk is the annual March of Dimes fund-raising event that also helps to raise awareness of the need for research for premature births, birth defects and infant mortality.
Last year, the March of Dimes raised $15,463.34 with the Walk in Demopolis.
Jadon Cleveland will serve as the ambassador child. The ambassador child will lead the Walk and will take part in the Christmas on the River children’s parade on Dec. 5.
Jennifer Thomason, the Demopolis community director of the March of Dimes, added that she needs volunteers to help with the March of Dimes Walk.
“I need people to come and help me on the committee: getting the Walk organized, getting teams situated and getting people motivated to raise money for this year’s event,” Thomason said.
“We need someone to help with the sponsorship, going door-to-door to the businesses and soliciting sponsors, helping them get teams organized and getting schools to participate with the Baby Banks and things like that.”
To volunteer to help with March of Dimes events or to take part in the Walk, contact Thomason at (334) 216-5351 or e-mail her at Jennifer@demopoliscatv.com. She can also be reached at Robertson Banking Company’s downtown branch.
“People can contact me before the Walk, and we can register them and give them an envelope to get started with,” she said. “Or, if they just want to raise money on their own, they can come to the Walk that morning and register there.”
The March of Dimes works to support research to prevent birth defects and other natal and prenatal difficulties. It all works through help from the community.
