HUNTSVILLE — Former Demopolis High standout Casey Cantey is turning heads and draining shots in his sophomore season for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs.
The talk of the SWAC in the season’s early going, Cantey is among the Bulldogs’ leaders in nearly every major statistical category.
Cantey has become A&M’s go-to scorer, leading the team in field goal attempts, field goal percentage, field goals made, free throws made and attempted and scoring.
His 19.2 points per game through Friday not only tops the Bulldogs’ list, but leads the SWAC as well.
Cantey’s scoring output has helped the Bulldogs to a 3-3 record and has seen the former Tiger miss the 20-point mark only once. That game saw Cantey put up nine points on 5-of-8 shooting against Oakwood.
As impressive as his scoring has been, Cantey has proven a valuable player all the way around for A&M. Through the season’s first six games, the 6-foot-5 Cantey averaged 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.
Cantey scored a career high 28 points against Tuskegee last Saturday and will return to the floor Tuesday when the Bulldogs travel to Tennessee State. That game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
