For The ASWA
Two weeks ago, players such as Cherokee County quarterback Coty Blanchard, Demopolis running back DeMarcus James and Reeltown linebacker Shaquille Roberson helped their respective schools win state titles at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
Today, they add individual honors to go with their team championships – Back or Lineman of the Year in their respective classes, in tandem with the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State football selections.
Each of the six classes among Alabama High School Athletic Association member schools as well as the Alabama Independent Schools Association saw Back and Lineman of the Year chosen by an ASWA panel. In a departure from previous years, the ASWA will announce its Super 12 players on Christmas Day, along with the player selected as its Mr. Football Award winner.
Blanchard and James were named the Class 4A and Class 5A Back of the year, respectively, while Robertson was the Class 2A lineman of the year. In addition to those three players, four coaches who won state titles were also honored in their respective divisions with ASWA Coach of the Year honors: Tripp Curry of Cherokee County in Class 4A, Steve Smith of Piedmont in Class 3A, David Lowery of Brantley in Class 1A and Mitch Turberville of Monroe Academy in the AISA.
Other Back of the Year selections were quarterback Jeremiah Tullidge of Tuscaloosa Academy (AISA), running back Kendarius Fritts of Linden (1A), Millry quarterback Dylan Whitsett (2A), Cordova running back Ryan Smith (3A) and Prattville defensive back Nick Perry (6A). Other Linemen of the Year included Theodore linebacker C.J. Mosley (6A), Greenville defensive lineman Kenneth Carter (5A), UMS-Wright linebacker Jay Prosch (4A), T.R. Miller defensive lineman Johntae Brown (3A), Ariton linebacker Craig Sanders (2A) and Macon-East offensive lineman Jake Albritton (AISA).
Coach of the year selections included Brent Tinker of Ider (2A), Chris Raymond of LeFlore (5A) and Auburn’s Tim Carter (6A).
