Alex Crawford, Jr.

Alexander “Alex” Crawford Jr., age 85, of Greensboro died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Colonial Haven Care and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro.
He was born in Coleman, Texas, in 1928, moved to the Prairie Eden community and married his late wife, Helen Mayton Crawford, on Nov. 18, 1951. He was a longtime cattleman in Prairie Eden, where he lived most his life, and served as past president of the Hale County Cattleman’s Association and was longtime a member of The Alabama Cattleman’s Association. He was one of the organizers of the Allenville Swimming Pool Club and organized the Prairie Eden Community Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Demopolis, where he was a member of the Methodist Men’s Club and of the Couples Sunday school class.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Helen Mayton Crawford; his parents, Alexander Crawford and Ada Oliver Crawford; three sisters, Laura Anna Crawford, Allie Frances Knight and Grace C. Graf: and four brothers, James Monroe Crawford, Billy Oliver Crawford, Robert Lee Crawford and Solomon Dorsey “Chuck” Crawford.
Survivors include one daughter, Cecile C. (Joe) Sledge of Greensboro; one son, Alexander Bruce (Amy) Crawford Montgomery; and three grandchildren, Matthew Sledge of Birmingham, Molly Crawford of Atlanta and Thomas Crawford of Auburn.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m. at St Andrews Cemetery in Prairieville with the Rev. David Pierce officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kidd-Robbins Funeral Home Chapel in Demopolis.
