To open its 2010 season, Canebrake Players will present four performances of Joseph Kesselring’s classic, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” at the Old School Theater.

These performances will be held Thursday through Saturday, March 11-13, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m.

Directing the play will be Kim Shelton, who was in the trio of directors for the community theater group’s December production of “Hansel and Gretel.”

A cast of 12 has been selected to play the 14 roles. Making their debut performance in Demopolis will be Anna Freeman, Diane Lavender and Portia Shepherd. Joining them will be Mike Baker, John F. Johnston Jr., and Linda Ray, who performed in the group’s summer production of “Big River.”

Other familiar Canebrake faces will include Chrissy Brooker, Dana Freeman, Jennifer Roemen and Drew Tucker

Returning to the Canebrake stage after a break from acting will be Ann Parsons and Kim Townsend. Admission will be $7 for students and $10 for adults. A discount of $2 will be given to attendees who present evidence that they also attended a performance of “Bye, Bye, Birdie” at Demopolis High School.

The Canebrake Players began in 1981 to provide its members with opportunities to have fun while learning the art of acting and to present theatrical entertainment for area citizens. Throughout its 30-year history, the organization has performed many plays including its original run of “Arsenic and Old Lace” in 1990.
