Demopolis High earned more hardware Saturday as Tiger weightlifters took second place as a team in a weight lifting meet at Tuscaloosa County High School.
Demopolis head football coach and athletic director Tom Causey took 14 lifters to the meet, watching nine of them place in the top three in their respective weight classes. The Tigers placed lifters in 10 of the 19 weight classes at the meet.
Alex Wright took first place in the 123-pound weight class. Jerry Campbell finished first in the 148-pound class. Matt Sellers topped the 220-pound class. Delanee Reid won first place in the 235-pound class while Steven Foster finished first in the 275-pound class. Tremaine Sanders finished at the top of the super heavyweight class.
The Tigers also had Timothy Lee place second in the 181-pound weight division and Dontrayle Wheeler take third in the 198-pound class.
“Going into any meet like that, all we ask our guys to do is compete and represent Demopolis well,” Causey said. “They did exactly that. I was really proud of the way they represented, the way they carried themselves and the way they competed.”
The meet was the first of the year for Demopolis. Causey said he hopes to take the lifters to other meets this year, including a lift in Thomasville.
“It was the first year (Tuscaloosa County High School) had one. It was a really good meet, a really competitive meet,” Causey said. “Eventualy we would like to host one here.”
Causey said weight meets offer the school’s football players a chance to compete during the offseason as well as offering them a barometer by which to measure themselves.
“It’s a lot like track. When you step out there, it’s just you and a bar. You either do it or you don’t,” Causey said. “It gives them a chance to go out and kind of measure themselves up.”
