Although Demopolis is a AA team and the BL Bombers are ranked No. 7 in AAA, the Tigers nearly pulled off the upset before losing 10-9.
The Tigers will be back in action March 27-28 as Demopolis hosts its first USSSA Tournament at the Sportsplex.
“We are excited to be playing at home on some of the best fields in the state,” said Head Coach Brian Sellers.
There were 14 teams in the Tigers’ 12U age division and 36 teams in the entire tournament, which is about average according to Sellers. Prattville and Millbrook were inundated with baseball players and their families.
But attracting teams to a new tournament location is not easy and it takes time, according to USSSA Assistant State Director Dee Black who will be happy to see 4 to 6 teams in the 12U Demopolis Tournament.
However, Black admitted that he was surprised by the “super nice” facilities at the sportsplex and believes that once teams discover what excellent facilities Demopolis has to offer, attracting teams to Demopolis will be easy.
“I really believe the opportunity is there,” Sellers said. “Demopolis (could) host a couple of baseball or softball tournaments a month from March to November and have 25 or so teams show up.But for that to happen, it will require some vision, leadership, and a few years of hard work.”
