WES to have kindergarten registration

Westside Elementary School will have its kindergarten registration on April 1 and 2 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The school requests parents register their students with the last name beginning with the letters A through M on Thursday, April 1, and the last name starting with the letters N through Z on Friday, April 2. If parents cannot register on their assigned date, they may register their child on the other date.
Children must be 5 years old by Sept. 2, 2010, must attend the registration with their parents and have their certified birth certificate, an original Social Security card, blue immunization form and two proofs of residence.
“We will be contacting the area child care facilities, doctors’ offices and grocery stores and putting fliers out to bring it to everyone’s attention,” said WES principal Connie Brown.
Children registering for kindergarten will be given some tests to prepare them for their kindergarten.
“We do a vision and hearing screening,” Brown said. “The Pilot Club comes and fingerprints the children for safety and identification, and the children are given an assessment by the kindergarten teachers to get an idea of what they know coming into kindergarten.
“It’s a good experience for the children, a chance for them to come to the school and look around prior to starting. Once this registration is complete, a person can still continue to register for kindergarten all the way through the summer. We will also contact these parents about our two-week kindergarten readiness program in June to invite them to participate in it.”
This year, Westside has 190 children enrolled in 12 kindergarten units, one of the largest classes to be had at Westside.
