Demopolis Middle School (4-12) suffered a pair of setbacks Thursday night, dropping both ends of a double-header to Curry 14-3 and 12-0.
The Lady Tigers got two runs in the third and one in the fifth during the first game of the afternoon. Meredith Mackin, Alex Barnett and Cameron Thomason each scored runs while Brittany Tanner picked up an RBI.
“She’s the most improved player on the team,” head coach Charles Jones said of Tanner, an eighth-grader who did not make the squad the previous season. “She’s been in centerfield and has a good bat.”
Tanner stepped into the circle in relief during the third inning of the second game. Her team already down 9-0, Tanner threw strikes.
“We’ve had that problem in different places we’ve pitched her, the defense has let her down,” Jones said. “We knew Curry was good coming into this contest.”
The losses moved Demopolis to 1-3 on the week, the Lady Tigers win coming Tuesday over West Blocton.
“I’ve always said it is developmental ball with my eighth-graders to get them ready for the next level so they at least have a chance to make the (high school) team,” Jones said of the focus of the middle school program.
The team will next turn its attention to a Saturday tournament in Northridge.
“We’ve seen at least two or three of the teams in the tournament,” Jones said. “We’ve seen Brookwood and Echols. And we play Brookwood first. We beat them the first time (we saw them) and they beat us the second. We actually stand a good chance of getting down to the final four on that thing.”
