If you’re playing Marengo County high school fantasy baseball, you just might want to make Marengo Academy’s Chris Sammons your No. 1 pick. The Longhorn backstop, affectionately called “Pig” by teammates and coaches, has been on an unreal tear the last week.
Already his team’s home run leader with four jacks heading into last week, Sammons has managed to double that number in less than seven days. The junior cranked two out last week before returning home Monday to face Tuscaloosa Academy. What did he do that day? Well, nothing major. He just went 5-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs.
That brings his season total to eight bombs on the year through Monday. In addition to providing significant pop and protection out of the Longhorns’ cleanup spot, Sammons has caught all but one inning this season for Marengo Academy. All in all, Sammons is hitting .441 with a .627 on-base percentage, 37 RBIs and 40 runs scored for the region champion Longhorns.
