A ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. at Sweet Water High School to dedicate a new granite plaque that will be placed in the high school hall.
The plaque will be dedicated in memory of the sacrifice of soldiers who were former Sweet Water High School students who died while serving the country.
SWHS principal Stan Stokley said the Class of 1958 was instrumental in erecting the new plaque, which replaces an older memorial that was placed in the school in the 1940s.
“It is believed that the older plaque was lost during school renovations years ago,” Stokley said.
He researched and solicited help from the community to secure a list of names of former students who were killed in action. The list totals 14 names, 12 of which died in World War II, one in Vietnam and one in the Gulf War.
“There has been a tremendous amount of community support and help to get the list of names,” he said.
The public is invited to the dedication ceremony, which will be held inside the high school building.
There will be limited seating available during the ceremony.
Those unable to attend can view the plaque during school hours.
