School board to fill needed spots

While much has been said of the process to fill the position of Demopolis City Schools superintendent, there has not been much publicity surrounding the other spot on the school board.
Board chair Gary Holemon’s second term will come to an end at the end of this school year. He has served the maximum two terms very well.
Positions on the Demopolis school board are filled by appointment through the city council. At the last city council meeting, council members provided a couple of nominees and were unable to provide a majority vote in favor of any of them.
There are many qualifications that should be sought in a school board member. The ability to do business, to understand the needs of the schools, to be able to make financial decisions in financially challenging times and the ability to maintain the perspective of the teacher, the student and the common good of the school system all at the same time are just a few of those.
