Hospital honors volunteers, awards eight scholarships

Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital honored its volunteers of the Auxiliary on Tuesday as part of its 2010 Volunteer Week luncheon, also awarding its scholarships to area students.
Auxiliary president Lloyd “Buddy” Jones was named the 2010 Volunteer of the Year. Sharon Farst earned the Presidential Call to Service award for attaining more than 4,000 career hours of volunteer service at the hospital. Also honored were Auxiliary charter members Genida Johnson and Edith Whitfield.
Recipients of the 2010 Carolyn S. (Betty) McCormick Scholarship include Katie Brooker, a student at the University of Alabama studying occupational therapy; Ashley Green, a student at Samford University studying pharmacy; Lindsay Osborne, a student at the University of West Alabama studying nursing; Jessica F. Pearson, a student at the University of West Alabama studying nursing; and Heather Pope, a senior at Demopolis High School who wants to study nursing.
Recipients of the 2010 Emmett and Carolyn Clinkscales Scholarship include Dexter Laye, a senior at Greene County High School who wants to study general medicine; Katie McKinney, a student at the University of West Alabama studying nursing; and Riley Tucker, a student at the University of West Alabama studying nursing.
Auxiliary members honored with the president’s Volunteer Service Award and the hours that they worked in the 2009 calendar year were:
