Four World War II veterans will make a one-day trip to Washington, D.C., today (Saturday) as part of the nationally recognized Honor Flight Network.

George Franks, Paul Gresham, Oscar McLamb and Buddy Pickel will board a plane in Tuscaloosa at

“We’re going to view the World War II Memorial,” said Gresham, a veteran who fought in the D-Day Invasion on June 4, 1944. “It’s going to be a one-day trip.”

Other scheduled Honor Flights for today include those from Michigan; Rochester, N.Y.; two from Brushy Creek, Iowa; and one from southern middle Tennessee.

The Demopolis veterans will leave Tuscaloosa this morning at 7 a.m. and will return from Washington, D.C., tonight at 8 p.m. It is a rare treat for these men who fought for our country more than a half-century ago, to see how they and their fellow soldiers have been honored.
