Demopolis’s 8U All Star team heads to Alex City today to play in the Cal Ripken State Tournament.

Head coach Ronnie Cox says that he expected his team to perform well, and “put on a good show for the crowd.”

After decimating the competition in the District 10 tournament with a combined score of 133-32, Cox said his team still has room for improvement, particularly in base running and fielding.

“This team has improved a great deal,” he said. “(The kids) are excited to play. We gave them a week off to rest up, and even after that the last few practices have gone well.”

Focus and concentration is a key aspect of any sport, especially baseball, and especially in this age group.

“This group of kids has the potential to win it all. This team can hit and catch top to bottom, all our players.,” he said. “If they hit the ball the way they have been, then I feel they could make the top two or three teams, or perhaps win first.”

Many in Demopolis are of the opinion that this 8U team is the best that has come through that age group in quite some time. Cox whole heartedly agrees.

“Everyone is capable. They are a strong team, with good fundamentals, and a lot of heart.”

Perhaps all of this together can guarantee a victory at the Cal Ripken Tournament Saturday. No matter who comes out on top, win or lose, the 8U All Stars will be just that: All Stars.
