The Demopolis Police Department is on the lookout for a man who attempted to break into the Robertson Bank Westside Branch ATM machine early Wednesday morning.
Robertson Senior Vice President Allen Bishop, who works from the Westside Branch, said video surveillance equipment shows the man spent approximately two minutes trying to open the machine at approximately 4 a.m. this morning.
Demopolis police chief Tommie Reese issued a release Wednesday morning regarding the attempted robbery.
“In the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 28, a suspect broke into the ATM machine at the Robertson bank Westside branch,” the release stated. “The suspect used a large tool to break the lock on the front of the ATM machine, not knowing that the vault of the ATM machine could not be broken into. After damaging the machine and not being able to obtain any cash, the suspect is seen on video running from the scene towards the Maria Drive area.
“The suspect is described as a black male approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 180 to 190 pounds. At the time of the burglary, the suspect was wearing a T-shirt tied around his head.
“The public is asked to take a close look at the photos from the video and see if they can help identify this burglary suspect. If you have information about this burglary or can identify the suspect, please contact the Demopolis Police Department at (334) 289-3073 or the tip line at (334) 289-1475. The tip line is confidential.”
“Obviously, he didn’t know much about ATM machines,” Bishop said. “There’s practically no way to get to the money inside without the proper keys. An ATM machine is fortified.”
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
