The Demopolis Middle School volleyball team got its season started this week, going 1-1 with a Wednesday loss to Westlawn and a Thursday win over West Blocton.

“They’ve got a lot to learn, but they ware a young team,” DMS head coach Blythe Martin said of her players. “They have great potential.”

Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Tigers lost at home, dropping game one 25-17 and game two 25-21. The team then traveled to West Blocton where it picked up a sweep, winning 25-18 in game one and 25-15 in game two.

The squad is scheduled to play again Tuesday at Westlawn. Martin indicated she learned a great deal about her players in the two contests.

“Alyssa Nickens is a pretty consistent server,” Martin said.

“Jade Montgomery knows the game of volleyball. She has an understanding of the way the game works. And she has a consistent serve. Nicole Martin is going to be a good back row player. Ebony Moore and Caleb Washington, once they understand their job at the net, they will be great volleyball players. They will be valuable at the net in the future. And Emily Riffe, she has made some great plays that we really needed.”
