Yard sales should have legal signs

The City of Demopolis employees have found several yard sale signs around town in violation of the sign ordinance, and want to warn people about misplaced signs.
According to Section 904 of the city ordinances, signs should not be attached to trees, utility poles or placed on any public right-of-way or public property.
City workers pulled in more than 30 yard sale signs this week in violation of the ordinance, and more than half of those were for a yard sale in the French Creek area.
There is a penalty for improperly displaying a sign. According to Section 1207 of the code, any person violating that ordinance shall be fined between $50 and $100 as well as court costs for each offense.
Section 603 of the city ordinances, which deals with yard sales, states that sales should last no longer then three days, should be held no more than twice yearly, and should be held on an owner’s property and not on public property without written permission from the City of Demopolis.
No goods purchased for resale may be offered for sale, and no consignment goods may be offered for sale. All signs must comply with the city’s sign ordinance and must be removed within one day after the end of the sale.
City of Demopolis employees appreciate the cooperation of those holding yard sales. Anyone wanting information regarding city laws regarding yard sales may call Demopolis City Hall at (334) 289-0577.
