A man was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 80.
Ruben Martinez Barron was struck by a Nissan Titan pickup truck that was traveling westbound on U.S. 80 at 8:57 p.m. near Parr’s Chevron West.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Marengo County coroner Stuart Eatmon. Saturday was Martinez’s 45th birthday.
Demopolis police chief Tommie Reese speculated that Martinez had recently arrived in Demopolis.
“From the information that we’ve gotten, he was trying to cross the road,” Reese said.
“He had just missed another vehicle and ran in front of this vehicle. The first vehicle that he missed was a semi that was traveling eastbound.”
The second vehicle was unable to stop. Reese said that no charges were filed in the incident and said that the body had been sent for an autopsy.
The Demopolis Police Department investigated the incident.
