This Friday and Saturday, there will be a 234-mile-long yard sale along the Tombigbee River, and Demopolis will be the southernmost point of the fun.
The “Trash and Treasures along the TennTom” will take place at cities and towns along the Tombigbee River from Iuka, Miss., all the way down to Demopolis. Those who want to take part in Demopolis are asked to bring their wares to the city landing softball field or anywhere along U.S. Highway 43 with property owners’ permission.
“Information about this can be found at www.tenntom.org,” said Jennifer Tate, the executive director of the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are the only participating area in Marengo County.
“I understand that people come up for this from Sweet Water, Thomasville and other cities south of us to shop at the yard sale here. People look for this and keep traveling and shopping as they go.”
Other locations along the river include Eutaw; Aliceville; Pickensville; Columbus, Miss.; West Point, Miss.; Amory, Miss.; Aberdeen, Miss.; Fulton, Miss.; Tilden, Miss.; and five locations in Tishomingo County, Miss., ending at Iuka.
“This is the fourth year for us to have this,” said Agnes Zaiontz of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Tourism Association. “It’s a big string of yard sales on roads that follow the TennTom. People don’t have to register; all they have to do is set up at the designated areas or along the routes, as long as they have the property owner’s permission.”
