Demopolis FD reaching community

Today, members of the Demopolis Fire and Rescue Department will work to see that a few families have a Happy Thanksgiving that otherwise may not have been possible.
Fire fighters will deliver a 10 to 12 pound turkey, 4 pounds of stuffing, four quarts each of green beans, yams and gravy, a dozen rolls and a gallon of tea to 15 local families in need.
The idea sprang forth as part of the department’s work with community service.
“We do a lot on the national level,” firefighter Matt Allred said, who spearheaded the Thanksgiving campaign with the help of firefighter Jason Fields. “We do the fill the boot for Muscular Distrophy and things like that. We wanted to do something on the community level.”
As part of their fundraising effort, the department broke out the familiar “Fill the Boot” campaign and raised more than $600.
The families in need were identified by the county department of human resources, the city school system and local hospice agencies and all 15 plates will be delivered in style as part of a parade of fire trucks.
Allred said all that money was put toward the Thanksgiving drive.
The food was prepared by Vowell’s Fresh Market. Vowell’s also donated 15 gallons of sweet tea.
