TROY — Demopolis (39-9) used a gritty performance from Zoe Lewis and a timely home run by Raylee Eubanks to down Brookwood 3-2 in an elimination game that went 10 innings.
Eubanks suffered a knee injury in the Lady Tigers’ loss to Chelsea earlier in the day and was relegated to designated player duties that only allowed her to bat during the Brookwood contest. Eubanks needed to see only one pitch in the top of the 10th to stroke a round-tripper over the left field fence for what proved to be the winning run.
Lewis entered the game in the bottom of the first after starting pitcher Madison Laduron was struck on the elbow by a pitch while batting in the top of the frame.
Lewis allowed one run in the first inning when Caitlin Hallum scored on a RBI single by Kirby Hutchins. Demopolis ended of the inning when left fielder Madison Bozeman threw out Amanda Medders at the plate for the final out of the frame.
Lewis’ final spot of trouble came in the third when Hunter Slayton reached on a single and stole two bases before coming around to score on an RBI groundout by Medders. Demopolis escaped further damage when Sydney Colyar threw home to retire Caitlin Headrick, accounting for the fifth time in two Saturday tournament games the Lady Tigers have recorded an out at the plate.
Lewis scattered eight hits over 10 innings of work while striking out three for the win in the elimination game.
Demopolis got its first run when Kristin Beach led off with a single before eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Eubanks.
The Lady Tigers scored in the top of the sixth to tie the game when Eubanks singled before giving way to runner Meredith Mackin, who scored on an Alex Crawford RBI single.
The Lady Tigers will play the winner of the contest between Pleasant Grove and Shelby County.
