PTA looking for new members

The halls of the city’s schools are full. The Demopolis Parent Teacher Association (PTA) wishes they could say the same thing.

The Demopolis PTA serves Westside, U.S. Jones and Demopolis Middle School, but with a current force of 256 parents, they often find resources stretched somewhat thin.

“We do fundraisers for all the schools, teacher appreciation…any event that needs volunteers, we’re there,” said president Pam McKinley. “This year we bought school supplies and backpacks and meals for needy children.”

Chartered in 1991, the Demopolis PTA has become the support arm for the classroom, but McKinley said their volunteer staff is well under what was needed.

“Ideally, we’d have 1,500 members,” she said. “That would roughly equal the number of students in the three schools we serve.”

Goals for the PTA membership drive are a little more conservative. McKinley said she hopes to see enrollment hit 500 this year. Enrollment for a person with one child in the school system is $10. Fees for a person with two or more children in the system is $15. A local discount card is provided as part of the membership, which is good for discounts at local merchants and retailers.
