Demopolis answered a handful of questions Friday night when it downed Class 6A Robert E. Lee 27-12 in its Jamboree contest.
The Tigers, replacing nine starters on the defensive side of the ball, opened the night on the defensive. The Tigers forced a three-and-out highlighted by a Kessey Bell sack to hand the ball to the offense.
Two plays later, Demopolis handed the ball right back when it fumbled on its own 48 following a brief 18-yard drive.
Senior safety Pat Taylor wasted little time picking his teammates up when he jumped an underneath route and intercepted a Robert E. Lee pass before taking it 55 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Mitch McPherson’s point after kick left the Tigers up 7-0.
Demopolis stretched its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when McPherson connected on an extra point following a 24-yard touchdown pass from Tucker Jones to sophomore Demetrius Kemp. That play capped an eight-play, 88-yard drive.
A fumble return for a touchdown put Lee on the board with 2:12 to go in the first half, cutting the score to 14-6.
A Demopolis turnover two plays into the second quarter allowed Lee to put together a two-play, 18-yard drive to score its only offensive touchdown of the evening.
Demopolis went on to add a 24-yard field goal from McPherson and a 27-yarder from Spence Overstreet. The Tigers capped when backup quarterback Tyler Oates threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Cortez Lewis. Overstreet added the extra point kick.
The Tigers open the regular season Saturday, Aug. 27 against Louisville (Miss.). That game will be played at Spain Park High School and will kick at 3 pm.
