Grant funds available

The Demopolis City School system is accepting proposals from eligible community organizations that provide programs for students in danger of school failure or dropping out.

“I have applications in my office,” Gina Johnston, federal programs director of Demopolis City Schools, said.

The process is open to nonprofit organizations such at the Theo Ratliff Activity Center, West Alabama Mental Health and Marengo Family Resource Center, entities which are currently serving Demopolis City Schools.

The eligible organizations much be nonprofit and nongovernmental. Proposals should be submitted not later than Monday, Sept. 12 to Johnston.

“That’s part of the requirement for at-risk funding,” Johnston said of the necessity of proposing organizations being nonprofit entities which partner with the school system. “That is a component of that allocation is that 20 percent of that is a partnership.”

The proposals should focus on issues such as truancy, counseling, parental issues or anything else designed to help at-risk students.
