Marengo High teams playing through difficult stretch

Marengo High School closed out a competitive week Saturday when the varsity boys and girls each picked up a win over John Essex.

The varsity girls opened the action with a 73-20 drubbing of the Lady Hornets. The win moved Marengo’s girls to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in the area.

Tallamachia Dumas led the Lady Panthers with 22 points and 18 rebounds. She also added three steals and three blocked shots.

Alesia Bowser finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists and four steals. Kiana Lewis added 13 points while Shakayla Bouler had 11.

The Marengo varsity boys followed with a 36-32 victory to get in the win column for the first time this season.

Quentin Hazewood led the was with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Travis Ford added seven points and seven rebounds while Patrick Bouler chipped in six points and six rebounds.

Michael Moore led John Essex with 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

The victories came just one night after Marengo contended with A.L. Johnson for the final time during the regular season.

The junior varsity boys opened that trio of games with a 48-47 loss to ALJ, falling to 0-4. Demetrius Bowser led Marengo with 18 points and seven rebounds. Deshon Smith added 12 points, eight rebounds and eight steals for MHS while Jordan Lockett had nine points and five rebounds.

The Marengo Lady Panthers followed with a gritty 41-31 win over A.L. Johnson’s Lady Eagles. Alesia Bowser led all scorers with 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Bouler finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Dumas added 11 boards and six assists to go with three steals and three blocks.

Ashley Edwards led ALJ with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Tiffany Barber added seven points while La Robyn Harris had five.

The Marengo varsity boys narrowly missed stealing one as they fell 45-44 to close out the night. Hazewood led the way with 10 points and five rebounds in that game. Ford had eight points and eight rebounds while Malik Butler also added eight points.

Castillo Huggins led the Eagles with 15 points while Demarcus Woods finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The contest with ALJ came on the heels of a clash with Thomasville that saw the Marengo Lady Panthers pick up a 48-37 win over their Class 4A foes. Dumas led the way that night with 14 points, 17 rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Alesia Bowser added 14 points and seven rebounds while Bouler finished with 11 points.

The varsity boys lost 58-34 in the nightcap with Jamarcus Agee putting up 10 points and five rebounds to lead the effort. Hazewood finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Panthers and Lady Panthers are set to play again Thursday night when they travel to Choctaw County High.
